A Piece of History |
 The
culture and history of James Island is another reason this area is so appealing. The
island is often remembered as the site where the Civil War began at Fort Sumter in
1861, which is just off James Island. During those years, the island was known for its agriculture. Around 20 plantations
made up much of the land, including the famous McLeod plantation where you can still
find slave cabins intact. James Island is also home to the Seashore Farmers Lodge,
which was known as an African American community center after the Civil War.
This island is one of the most popular places to live in Charleston because of its
close proximity to both the beach and the area of downtown Charleston. If
you're a nature lover, there are plenty of activities like hiking trails, boating,
fishing, and kayaking, but if you're looking for a day of sightseeing and shopping,
you can just as easily travel to downtown Charleston. |
